It is kind of a system though, and one that doesnt suit my practice. They are also fully compatible with traditional oil colours, so using a fast drying white as a base for your mixes means that they will dry at a quicker rate overall. You have to be careful with every brand of paint of course, but they have a pretty solid range without too many nonsense colours. If you aspire to do anything beyond a dabble, look elsewhere. Its quite student grade across the series and the paint is rather too oily and loose out of the tube in my experience. Williamsburg Handmade Oil Colors. Old HollandClassic Oil Colours, like Blockx, exists outside my price range for general use. They only sell online and out of a small, wonderful demonstration showroom in Chelsea. Original Permalba is a superb white, soft and buttery from the tube, but with a surprising weight and opacity compared with other brands. There are many hues in the line which should probably be avoided unless you are banging out practice paintings like a first year. Titanium White reflects back a lot of light compared to other whites, which makes it appear much brighter. They are mixed with linseed oil, have a fairly thick consistency that appeals to me, and have a pretty high pigment load across the range. If you see them, they are definitely worth trying. Really, because it is so fine and highly pigmented, the colour goes quite a bit farther than than it does with other paints. One thing to note is that Holbein paint seems to stand the test of time. Which white to use has always been a mystery to me and have always tended to use titanian white. Looking at online color samples of yellowed white artist paint, in an image editor, shows that the yellow color is actually a low-chroma orange. As a student I immediately gravitated toward more robust paints in aluminum tubes, like Rembrandt etc. It is a stronger tinting white, and honestly I like M Grahams more than I liked Permalba. It is hard to imagine that was being driven purely by cost concerns (after all, titanium dioxide is not that expensive) so it might have simply provided the properties they wanted. I recently price checked Cremnitz White, and its an eye watering $67.80cad for a 40ml tube more than twice the price of the equivalent from Michael Harding. 3 out of 5. As an added note, I had a couple of colours which hardened in the tube on their own accord. Some whites are also prone to yellowing with age, so that is another detail to factor into your choices. So take all of this simply for what it is a snapshot in time. These run the range from tiny companies of (sometime lone) colourmen to industrial scale automated complexes, and the quality and qualities of paint can vary widely. What might seem like a lot of Blanc Fixe by weight ends up being much less in volume if I am not wrong. This line remains good quality and within my price range. I agree it is interesting and even surprising to see a white using that large a percentage of blanc fixe. It can be confusing! Bill Martin recently pointed out it has safflower in it, and my permalba white does too. Zinc White has great permanence and lightfastness. Dispersant additive: 1 pt. Michael Harding Phthalo Blue & Zinc White, is now Phthalo Blue & Titanium White). My conclusion is to do a 50/50 mix of Titanium white and Zinc white. It is comparatively quick drying and non-yellowing, and also contains no lead. Important to note, they are now made with safflower oil, and there have been some changes to the colours in the line. Blue U.B. Do you know much about the crimnate white lead carbonate as Ive heard its a good transparent white for using with French ultramarine to give that atmospheric distance in a landscape. If you are interested in Old Holland paint, I would first do some research online for favoured colours, because there are some in the range for sure there are some lovely greens for example. They promote a system in which you add alkyd medium to the paint mixture to speed the drying time.
