Ive recently been spoiled by new Shimano XTR and XT brakes, and everything else now pales in comparison. Santa Cruz will be producing the Tallboy frameset in both CC and C carbon options. The 2.3 Maxxis DHF up front and the DHR in the back make a great combo for the greasy roots and technical terrain that we have in the Pisgah National Forest. And theyre both designed around a solid 120/130mm suspension design. Heavier weight and reduced suspension kick wont suit previous Tallboy die hards but that brings the Blur TR into the limelight. You can also get a CC frame only for $3,099. Experts found the bike stable to ride with gear and additional weight. I not only had a hard time keeping the front wheel planted, I also had to fight to keep the front end from wandering on ultra-steep climbs. The 760mm RaceFace Ride handlebars and 50mm stem place riders in a position of leverage, control and power riding the Santa Cruz Tallboy. The axle flip chip works by moving the threaded axle mount forward or rearward depending on which plate you use (each versionlong and shortalso corrects the proportions of the derailleur hanger). The Local Overnighters Project is a unified effort to document and map one-night bikepacking routes all over the worldby locals, in their own backyards. Lastly, I wasnt too keen on the SRAM G2 brakes. to support us + get The Bikepacking Journal, starting line of singletrack-heavy bikepacking races, Downhill performance is more important than climbing advantage, You want the ability to lengthen the chainstay and tweak the geometry, Extra tire clearance is important (it has a little extra wiggle room for 2.6 tires), Youre short or very tall (XS and XXL sizes are available), Under downtube bottle mounts are important, You like technical climbing and performance is important in that regard, You have long legs and want to maintain a steep seat angle (Tallboy has a bent seat tube, creating an effective STA that will change with a longer post), You ride a large or XL and want a hair more frame bag space; Ripleys split triangle actually has more volume available than the Tallboy, You want a more budget Shimano 12-speed build (SLX build available for $5,079 and XT build for $5,799; Tallboy only has XTR for $9,799), Well engineered suspension redesign that makes it aesthetically pleasing and one of the most downhill-capable short-travel 29ers on the market, Adjustable geometry with axle and shock flip chips, Santa Cruz preserved under downtube bottle mounts (bike has two pairs), Odd build spec with a few cons (as detailed above under Build Kit), Can get a little clumsy and wandering on steep climbs (especially for us long-legged riders), Despite the lower linkage shock, it still has a relatively small frame bag space in the triangle, The internally routed cables exit the headtube pretty far forward which was a bit of an issue with a standard handlebar roll. Unfortunately, it was a bit too large to make a full qualitative review. The Rockgeist BarJam might be a good remedy. The bike has clearance for tires up to 2.6". It also means that taller riders can tailor the fit of the bike and create a balanced front-rear proportion. I think a lot of the differences come down to tire choice and not necessarily width. Geometry pushes well into the future with a significantly longer front centre, a reduced fork offset, a pretty-steep 76 seat angle, and a very-slack-for-its-category 65.5 head angle. For those worried about the vulnerability of the shock position, Santa Cruz has added a neat mudguard to shield the stanchion from rear tyre spray. They have exactly the same shape and suspension design as the carbon Tallboys, and you also get the same lifetime warranty. And you can always run the stock Minion 2.3 tire in the rear with the axle flip chip in the longer position if thats your preference. Instead of being mounted underneath the top tube like the old Tallboy, the shock is now anchored to the downtube, where its driven by the lower VPP link. However, the metal Tallboys do miss out on the adjustable chainstays, and the size range is capped at S-XL. Santa Cruz calls the Tallboy a gravity riders cross-country bike, and our testers couldnt agree more. A separate brake adapter and derailleur hanger come supplied with the frame for when you want to change the dropout position. So, for those of us with longer legs and more seatpost, that angle is actually slacker. I had three mechanics try to dial it in, but the shifting was delayed and off in the mid-gears. On a Medium size for example, the seat tube shrinks from 420mm to 405mm, which gives you an extra 15mm of clearance to run a longer dropper post. As with the Hightower and Megatower models, Tallboy is now 29er only, perhaps signposting that the plus tyre craze has come to an end at least on full suspension bikes anyway. So popular in fact, that it eventually killed off Santa Cruz own 26in Blur. It has 130mm of travel in the fork and 120mm of travel in the rear. The Tallboys headtube angle is also significantly slacker, making it more downhill centric and noticeably more clumsy when climbing. Speaking of bottles, bravo to Santa Cruz for leaving the pair of mounts under the downtube. Experts found it stable riding through technical, slow terrain and down rocky descents. Equipped with the dual-link VPP suspension design, 100mm of rear travel and a 100mm travel fork, the Tallboy soon found favour with XC riders and marathon racers all around the globe, who praised it for its efficiency and fast-rolling demeanour. The most visible difference between the former (version 3) Tallboy and the V4 model is the move to a lower-link suspension design. In summary, this is what cyclists think. I rode the Santa Cruz Tallboy with a fairly lightweight overnight bikepacking kit on a couple of occasions. Once the longer plates are in place, the Tallboy comfortably fits 29 x 2.6 tiers with room to spare. After three generations of evolution, Santa Cruz have gone all out with the fourth Tallboy. Similarly, borrowing traits from the Hightower, Santa Cruzs (more) aggressive 140mm trail 29er, the 2020 Santa Cruz Tallboy has a 65.5 head-angle, generous front center, and steep 76.6 seat tube, numbers that are typically reserved for longer-travel bikes. Fortunately, after a lot of riding and testing, I decided that it fits somewhere in the middle of those two assumptions. But, all this doesnt mean it lost its ability to pedal well, which well get to. At 6 0 tall, Im within the fit range for a large, which Santa Cruz claims is between 5 9 and 6 1. Even with its 71 (!) Thanks in advance for spreading the word! Start at our worldwide routes map to dig into our detailed guides with GPS maps and inspiring photography. Three years later, as plus tyres became all the rage, Santa Cruz brought out Tallboy 3.0. I was torn on my decision until the 11th hour, but ultimately decided to purchase the Ripley. We inspire and inform through original bikepacking routes, stories, and coverage of the gear, news, and events that make our community thrive. But I guess that scale should be based on what XC means to you. BioCAS 2015 will comprise an excellent combination of invited talks and tutorials from pioneers in the field as well as peer-reviewed special and regular sessions plus live demonstrations. Santa Cruz recently redesigned their popular short-travel 29er and in doing so theyve created an impressively versatile and capable trail bike. Experts found the Tallboy playful and easy to pop off jumps on. There are also nine build options between the aluminum and carbon models, ranging from the $2,699 AL D to the high end CC XX1 AXS RSV for $10,399. The suspension rarely bottoms out during rough descents on the bike, according to experts. This allows riders to find a bike that best fits their preferences and budget. Impeccably damped and focused suspension character mean it wont suit riders who like the lumps taken out of their trail or their hands held if they overstep their skill/speed ratio either. Setting the shock chip to High seemed to help, even though it only raises the bottom bracket by 3mm. Despite the $8,000 price tag, its the lowest end of three CC builds (CC represents the top end, lightweight carbon frame constructionthe Tallboy is also offered in alloy and the mid-grade C carbon). When in the rearward (Low) position, it makes the suspension more progressive (more bottom out resistance), and lowers the bottom bracket a hair (38mm vs 40mm in High). Experts agree the Tallboys geometry and componentry make it comfortable for taking on endurance distances. The 76.4 head tube angle places riders in a position on climbs that keeps the front end of the bike down and allows riders to stay in line. The stock tires on the bike are 2.3. Yeti Cycles SB115 Turq Mountain Bike Frame, Yeti Cycles ARC Turq T2 X01 AXS Mountain Bike, Santa Cruz Bicycles Nomad Carbon CC Coil Mountain Bike Frame, Santa Cruz Bicycles Hightower Carbon CC X01 Eagle Mountain Bike, Ibis Mojo 4 Deore Carbon Wheel Mountain Bike. Even so, the Tallboy remains the archetype. Its a promise we stand behind: If you find a lower price on a bike elsewhere, we will sell it to you for 10% less. The Tallboy allows riders to climb with stability and minimal pedal bob. The internally routed cables exit to the controls pretty far forward on the headtube. Were committed to making sure that the cost of a bike does not keep you from cycling! In the end I liked the more playful feel of the shorter chainstay length so I threw a Maxxis Ardent 2.4 on the rear but ended up keeping the Honcho on the front for now. The shorter chainstay length (430mm) is more playful and lively, and the longer (440mm) is more stable descending and provides more traction for climbing, as well as more stability and comfort over long rides. Speaking of sizes, the new Tallboy is available in six frame sizes from the humongous XXL, all the way down to a brand new itty-bitty XS size. Building on the success of the original, Santa Cruz then rolled out the 2nd generation Tallboy in 2013, which kept a fairly similar recipe, but added in a 142x12mm thru-axle and gently reworked geometry. Im testing the $8,199 CC XO1 RSV model ($6,999 without the carbon Reserve (RSV) wheels). Bikepackers who are also avid trail mountain bikers (like me) get it, which is why bikes such as the Santa Cruz Tallboy can almost always be found on your local blue-black trails, as well as on the starting line of singletrack-heavy bikepacking races, rides, and routes. I look forward to welcoming you to enjoy the conference in Atlanta. Or is this one too far removed from the Tallboy weve previously loved so much? It hasnt just waded in though the Tallboy has performed an all-mighty cannonball! This provides a rider with the ability to tweak how the bike rides or fits. We have read all expert and user reviews on the Santa Cruz Tallboy. Pwoar! The Tallboy also sticks with 29in wheels, but it is no longer compatible with 27.5+ rubber. For example, if you find a bike for $480 that we have listed at $500, we will offer you to buy it for $432 through BikeRide. The IEEE Biomedical Circuits and Systems Conference (BioCAS) serves as a premier international. While its specced with a relatively steep 76.4 seat tube, that number isnt exact. Experts rarely had to adjust the shock from open on climbs. Given all the changes, what do you think of the new 4th generation Tallboy? A couple things to note about packing and space. Structurally speaking, the new frame is chunkier, lower and more aggressive in its stance. The Tallboy kisses goodbye 2x compatibility, with the rigid one-piece swingarm adding a vertical upright in place of where the front mech would have sat, which boosts back-end stiffness. Im planning to do some bikepacking on the Tallboy this summer and will likely switch back to the 2.6s. Subscribe to get special offers, free giveaways, and once-in-a-lifetime deals. You can fit a piggyback shock though as long as its not one of those enormous Fox X2 or Cane Creek bangers. The 29-inch wheels paired with Maxxis Minions roll over rocks and roots with ease. Also, as shown, I ran my trusty 22oz Klean Kanteen with a King Cage Iris under the downtube.
